Munster Minor Ladies Final

Kerry v Cork Mallow May 7th @3.30 pm

There’s always something mystical about a Kerry and Cork clash at any level and the meeting of the sides in the Munster Minor final on Bank Holiday Monday May 7th could prove to be a classic.

Kerry came into the Munster championship as hot favourites, and rightly so, as the majority of the players were part of the double All Ireland winning U/16 teams of 2015 and 2016. They haven’t had things all of their own way however, and they will be up against it when they play a formidable Cork side in the final.

Kerry’s Munster campaign started on February 18th with a 3-13 to 3-5 victory over Tipperary in Firies. Hannah O’Donoghue was on fire that day scoring 3 goals and 6 points, as Kerry displayed some excellent team work to record an impressive win.

Kerry made the long journey to Skibbereen for the next round of the competition to face Cork on April 2nd. The rebellettes were too hot for Kerry on the day and secured an impressive 4-12 to 3-6 victory over the Kingdom. This defeat meant that Kerry would have to face Tipperary once again if they were to advance to the Munster final. Tipperary had learned a lot since their first meeting, and were full value for a 2-6 to 0-7 lead at half time. The Kerry players had to dig deep in the second half and they outscored their opponents by 2-6 to 0-5 to record a 2 point victory.

Cork’s path to the final was more straight forward and after their 9 point victory over Kerry, they recorded a 2-14 to 0-6 victory over Tipperary in Round 2. They are a formidable side and players like Ciara O’Shea, Sarah Leahy, Jenny Murphy, Ciara McCarthy, Emma Cleary, Katie Quirke and Fiona Keating are certain to test the Kerry girls resolve. They are managed by former Cork great John Cleary, and it is certain that he will have his side well drilled for the encounter.

Kerry will be equally as well prepared by Jonathan Griffin. With players of the calibre of Tara Breen, Kate Maher, Kayla O’Connor, Ciara Ryan, Ciara Murphy, Fiadhna Tangney Niamh O’Connor,Anna Clifford and Hannah O’Donoghue in their ranks they have the quality to defeat the Cork kingpins. A good start will be vital of course, as Cork can be very difficult to haul back if they establish a lead.

This Munster Final is a very difficult match to call. Cork will go in as favourites after their victory earlier in the campaign. Kerry will have learnt a lot from this defeat and if their forwards are on song they could come away with a narrow victory. It won’t be easy though and don’t be surprised if there is just a point or 2 between the sides at the finish.

Kerry Minors Prepare To Face Cork In Munster Final.

The Kerry LGFA Minor Team will face Cork in the 2017 Munster Minor Final at Dr. Crokes Pitch at Lewis Road, Killarney on the Bank Holiday Monday, the 1st of May at 1pm.

Kerry will be up against it, as Cork are the reigning All Ireland Minor Champions for the past two years and still possess a number of their Minor All Ireland Winning stars from 2015 and 2016. Ciara Hughes and Ciara McCarthy are two fantastic players around the middle of the field and with their entire full forward line of Sadhbh O’Leary, Saoirse Noonan and Grace Culloty available from last year’s All Ireland Final, Cork will once again fancy their chances of making it three All Ireland titles in a row.

Indeed it should be noted that Cork’s full forward line scored 2-12 between them in their All Ireland Final triumph last year against Dublin, so Kerry will need to be on full alert if they are to curb thisattacking threat and overcome their fierce rivals.

Kerry Minor LGFA team only began their preparation for this year’s campaign in mid January but have made steady progress and had a comfortable 5-13 to 1-2 victory over Waterford en route to the final.

Kerry will be fully aware of the challenge that lies in wait against Cork but will be buoyed by two All Ireland U16 titles in the past two years and this young side have committed themselves fully in preparation for a tilt at the reigning All Ireland Minor Champions. Kerry will have home advantage at their captain Siobhan Burns’ home club of Dr. Crokes for the Munster Final and will be hoping for a large crowd to show up and support them as they attempt to win Kerry’s first provincial Minor title in a number of years.

The Kerry minor team will be announced this weekend.

The teams went in level with 1-4 each at half time, although the Kerry girls looked the much more impressive outfit in the first half.

Kerry were dealt a body blow at the start of the second half when Aoife Twomey goaled for the rebels, however an impressive 1-7 without reply put the Kingdom firmly in control of the game.

Cork did score a goal again in the 30th minute to ensure a nervy finish to the game, Kerry had the hard work done though and ran out winners by 4 points.

Kerry were well served by the outstanding Rachel O’Connor at full back, she was well assisted by Aoife Dillane and Ava Doherty in defence , Siofra O’Shea and Mary O’Connell dominated midfield, while Ella Teahan , Rachel Kilgallen, Danielle O’Leary and Rachel Dwyer were impressive in the forwards.  Goalkeeper Ciara Butler was also solid all through, her point blank save in the first half was one of the highlights of the game.

IMG_0990IMG_0951The Kerry minor ladies suffered a 4-16 to 2-9 defeat to Cork in Farranfore, also on Saturday.

Cork blitzed the Kingdom in the first half ,with forwards Grace Culloty and Laura Cleary helping themselves to  2-5 and 1-4 respectively, to see reds leading by 3-14 to 0-4 at the break.

Kerry came out with renewed vigour in the second half and took the game to their opponents. Outstanding performances from Sarah Murphy, Emma Dineen, Eilish O’Leary, Elizabeth Mohan and 2 goal substitute Andrea Murphy enabled Kerry to outscore Cork by 2-5 to 1-2 in this period

It wasn’t enough to garner the win , and in the end Cork finished 13 points to the good.

The second half performance will give Kerry massive hope and encouragement for the rest of the campaign.
