Seamus Mulvihill Takes Charge Of All Ireland Minor Ladies Final.

The honours just keep coming for Kerry’s top ladies referee Seamus Mulvihill. The genial Finuge /St Senans whistleblower has once again been entrusted to take charge of a national fnal – a massive endorsement of his continued excellence and consistency in charge of the biggest games.

Last May Seamus took charge of the National Football League Division 2 final between Cavan and Westmeath, and by all accounts did a fantastic job on the day. So good in fact that Seamus has been asked to take charge of today’s TG4 All Ireland minor final between Cork and Galway – and as they say in Kerry , “no better man for the job”.

Being assigned a game as big as this one doesn’t come about by accident or luck – all of the top referees are continuosly assessed and Seamus is inevitably gaining top marks every time that he steps out on the field. His experience and expert application of the rules are a massive help of course, and Seamus is certain to do a great job once again on the big stage.

All in Kerry Ladies Football would like to send Seamus their best wishes on what is the biggest game of the year for intercounty ladies minor football. We are certain that he will do a fantastic job once again.

The game can be seen live on TG 4 at 5 pm.

Randles Brothers Senior County Championship Semi Final

Southern Gaels 5-16 to Beaufort 0-11

Reigning Randles Bros Senior County champions Southern Gaels had little difficulty in defeating last year’s finalists Beaufort in Renard last Saturday evening. In fairness to the mid Kerry side they were down a number of players from last year’s campaign and the loss of the transferred Bernie Breen and injured duo Patrice Dennehy and Fiadhna Tangney were just too much for their largely young and inexperienced side.

Southern Gaels were clinically efficient and scored a goal straight from the throw in through Deirdre Corridan. The ex Kerry star was a thorn in the Beaufort side all day and her 1 goal and 9 points tally was a testament to the danger she posed all through the game. Anna Galvin followed up with a goal a minute later and even at that early stage of the game it was obvious that Beaufort were going to struggle against a determined Southern side. Megan O ‘Connell put over 4 points on the bounce for Southern Gaels before Hannah O’Donoghue scored Beaufort’s first point in the 10th minute of the game to make it 2-4 to 0-1. Corridan added 4 more points from frees with O’Donoghue and Amy Foley replying with points for Beaufort. Ava Murphy then scored Southern Gaels 3rd goal in the 19th minute but credit to Beaufort who kept battling and the impressive Sarah Houlihan put over 3 points with Corridan replying with 2 of her own once more to leave the half time score Southern Gaels 3-10 Beaufort 0-6

Whatever hope Beaufort had of making a comeback in the second half evaporated straight from the throw in when Anna Galvin scored a good goal. By the time Megan O’Connell added Southern Gaels 5th goal in the 40th minute they were already 16 points ahead and in cruise mode. Houlihan , O’Donoghue and Foley kept the scoreboard ticking over for Beaufort but in reality Southern Gaels had way too much for the young mid Kerry side who, in fairness to them, have shown rapid progress since they reformed their senior club in 2016.

Southern Gaels comprehensive win sets up a final against old foes Castleisland Desmonds. On the evidence of this performance the South Kerry girls will go into the encounter as favourites. They have the strength and experience to beat any team and Desmonds will have to be at their very best to mount a challenge and wrestle the Caroline Broderick Cup off their southern counterparts.
Scorers; Southern Gaels Deirdre Corridan 1-9 (8f), Ava Murphy 2-1, Megan O’ Connell. 1-4, Anna Galvin 1 goal, Amy Fitzgerald 0-1, Linda Cronin 0-1,
Scorers ;Beaufort Sarah Houlihan 0-6, Hannah O’ Donoghue. 0-2,Amy Foley 0-3.

The Draws Are Made For The Senior, Intermediate and Junior County Championships.

The Senior, Intermediate and Junior County championships were launched at the Randles Brothers garage in Killarney last Wednesday. Once again the Randles Brothers have kindly agreed to come on board and sponsor Kerry Ladies 3 most prestigous competitions.

Based on the Muckross Road in Killarney, Randles Bros Car Sales has been serving motorists in Kerry for over 90 years. Randles Bros are also based in Tralee at the Manor West Retail Centre. Randles Bros are the main Nissan Dealer for Kerry, and are an independent family run business led by David Randles.

In total 16 clubs were represented at the event including Kerry senior ladies captain Caroline Kelly of Southern Gaels as well as former captain Aislinn Desmond of Rathmore and Eilis Lynch of Castleisland Desmonds.

Defending senior champions Southern Gaels have been drawn away to combination side Killarney whilst the tie of the round features 2015 champions Rathmore at home to last year’s beaten finalists Beaufort.

In the Intermediate Championship the meeting of Listowel Emmets and Scartaglin is bound to be a cracker whilst the meeting of Abbeydorney and John Mitchels is the tie of the Junior A championship.

Kerry Captain Rachel Dwyer Is A Chip Off The Old Block !

20 years ago in 1997 Denis Dwyer of Waterville played at wing forward on the Kerry senior team that defeated Cavan in the All Ireland semi final in Croke Park.Denis Dwyer 2

Denis was one of the new kids on the block as Kerry manager Paidi O Se strove to build a side capable of ending Kerry’s 11 year wait for an All Ireland title.

Dwyer had been a precocious talent at underage level, and having won an All Ireland minor medal in 1994, he played at U21 level for Kerry for 3 years – 1995- 1997, captaining the Kingdom to All Ireland glory in 1995 and also winning an U21 All Ireland in 1996.

After being drafted into the Kerry senior team in 1997, Denis would become a vital cog on a Kerry machine that would ultimately go all the way to glory as Kerry defeated Mayo in the All Ireland final that September. Kerry also won the NFL title that year where Denis scored a vital goal in their victory over Cork.

Denis played with the Kerry senior team for 9 years and is the proud holder of 2 All Ireland senior championship medals.

What is significant about the All Ireland semi final against Cavan  is that now 20 years later, his daughter Rachel will captain the Kerry U14’s in an All Ireland semi final – and co incidentally it is also against Cavan!

Rachel’s mom is Michelle Fitzgerald – sister of Maurice – another link to the 1997 Kerry senior team! Of course her aunt is Marie Fitzgerald -an All Ireland senior medalist with Kerry in 1993 – so the breeding is good as they might say!

Rachel is very much in the mould of her father – a fast, hard working, skilful and athletic player- hopefully she can guide her team to victory in next Sunday’s All Ireland semi final.

Kerry Ladies Name Their Team For Munster Championship Against Waterford.

Kerry have named a largely experienced side for their Munster Championship first round clash against Waterford which takes place in Fraher Field, Dungarvan on Saturday at 2oc.

Manager Graham Shine hands championship debuts to Laura Fitzgerald of Na Gaeil in goals and Miriam O Keeffe of Finuge/St Senans in the half forward line.

Shine has also drafted in 8 of this years minor team to his squad and he is familiar with these players having coached them to All Ireland success at U/16 level.

Kerry also met Waterford in last years Munster championship and struggled for long periods before eventually pulling away and winning on a 1-14 to 1-7 scoreline.  Indeed it took a 1-6 haul from Sarah Houlihan to propel the Kingdom to a victory over a resilient Waterford challenge. Kerry will face a similar challenge on Saturday and Fraher Field will certainly be worth a few points to the home side.
