Semi Final Heartbreak in TG4 All Ireland Semi Final

TG4SemiFinal

It was heartbreak for Senior team in the TG4 All Ireland Semi Final as we faced familiar foe Cork. Despite heading into the game on good form, from the start Kerry were struggling as many of our opening attacks were grounded by a tight cork defence. Valerie Mulcahy fired over the opening score of the game inside 2 minutes while Kerry had to wait ten minutes for their opener as they struggled to break through a resolute Cork defence. However they adapted well and led by the mid-way stage of the half 0-3 to 0-2 and seemed to have weathered a Cork storm that saw the rebels wasteful as they ran up five wides in the half. But Cork struck for the first of their goals. Ciara O’Sullivan was quick to react to a Kerry kick out, a quick hand pass later and Áine O’Sullivan directed the ball to an empty net. Kerry’s response was good and they remained very much in touch trailing Cork 1-5 to 0-5 with LorraineScanlon, Bernie Breen and Sarah Houlihan all prominent.Alan O’Neill would have been happy to get his team to the break trailing by a single score but Cork inflicted another blow on 27 minutes when an individual piece of magic from Valerie Mulcahy saw her ghost unmarked inside the Kerry cover to chip to the net. Kerry again showed character in the remaining minutes and Sarah Houlihan produced two fine points to leave them in touch at the break 2-5 to 0-7. Kerry introduced 2 subs early in the second half ,introducing Laura Rogers and Louise Galvin as they
strengthened up the forward unit and despite some good early showing which kept Kerry within touching distance by the 38th minute (2-7 to 0-9). Unfortunately Kerry were forced into conceeding frees which Cork took advantage of.  Mulcahy put the game beyond reach by the 45th minute as Vera Foley broke the Kerry cover before Mulcahy found
herself free yet again in front of goal. This put Cork nine clear at a crucial time. Eimear Scally was introduced
late on and added a further goal at which stage Cork were already cruising.
