Kerry make it 3 wins out of 3 in Munster Senior Championship

TG4 Munster Championship Round 3

By Dan Kearney

Kerry 1-8 Waterford 1-7

Fiadhna Tangney came off the bench and scored the winning point for Kerry in a pulsating contest at Cordal GAA club in Round 3 of the TG4 Munster Senior Championship.

Waterford will point to 6 second half wides as being detrimental to their cause whilst Kerry will be happy to face into a Munster Final after a win in a game that they might well have lost.

Kerry were first off the mark when Jadyn Lucey pointed a free following a foul on Hannah O’Donoghue and in the 6th minute Lorraine Scanlon got on the scoresheet after some very good play from Eilis O’Connor.

Waterford’s Kelly Ann Hogan pointed a free following a foul on the impressive Aoife Murray and Kerry had a huge let off in the 12th minute when Lauren McGregor rattled the post with a superb shot at goal.

A Kelly Ann Hogan free in the 16th minute brought Waterford level and straight from the resulting kick out Hogan put her side one up from play.

We had to wait another 6 minutes for the next score and it was Kerry’s Hannah O’Donoghue who finished to the back of the net after a sweeping move involving Lorraine Scanlon, Amy Harrington and Emma Dineen.

The lively Katie Murray and Jadyn Lucey traded scores before Niamh Ní Chonchúir put Kerry 1-4 to 0-4 ahead in the 28th minute. Kelly Ann Hogan pointed a free soon afterwards , and it was Kerry that took a 1-4 to 0-5 lead in at half time.

Waterford spurned a goal chance early in the second half when Eve Power had to be content with a point, but they got the goal they craved from a Kaci Brazil penalty following a foul on Aine O’Neill.

Cora Murray made a brilliant block from Jadyn Lucey at the other end and although Waterford took control of proceedings, they were wasteful in possession.

Niamh Ní Chonchuir got a welcome point for Kerry in the 48th minute to bring them to within one, 1-5 to 1-6, but Kelly Ann Hogan slotted over to give Waterford the lead once more.

Katie Brosnan, looking sharp, hit a brace of scores to draw Kerry level but with time running out it was another substitute, Fiadhna Tangney, who sealed the win for Kerry.

Kerry crowned Munster Minor A Champions

Munster Minor A Championship

Cork 0-13 -v- Kerry 3-10

Referee: Patrick Smith (Waterford)

Kerry are Munster Minor A Champions following a deserving and thrilling win in Mallow on Sunday. While the pitch was in excellent condition heavy rain prior to throw in made handling conditions difficult for both sides. Kerry went into the game minus a couple of key players and possible went in as underdogs. Cork had a large contingent of last years minor panel available to them and they started the brightest with a point in the third minute. Mary Kate Smith responded for the Kingdom as both sides played positive football despite the conditions. As the sides kept exchanging scorers Kerry were possibly guilty early on of going for goal when a point was possibly the better option. But this didn’t knock their confidence. In fact they grew into the game and began to dominate it more as it wore on.

Katie Doe with her first point of the afternoon midway through the first half saw Kerry back in the lead. Two minutes later Kerry had their first goal. Katie Doe from the penalty spot after referee Patrick Smith judged Cork to have committed a foot block. Kerry now had a four-point lead. Cork reduced the deficit with a pointed free from Eabha Donovan but what was to follow was a Kerry goal that surprised everyone. Kelly Enright’s long ball deceiving the Kerry forwards and Cork backs bouncing in front of Cork keeper Andrea Toye who taught it was going over for a point and ended up in the back of the net. It opened up a six-point lead and it was no more than Kerry deserved as they were the more dominant team for large parts of the first half limiting Cork to just three points from play in the first half. Kerry added a further three points to open up an eight-point lead at the break. Cork had the advantage of the wind in the second half and were playing into the scoring end of Mallow. They started the brightest of the two with a Maebh Collins point to reduce the deficit. Kerry was still playing with the same intensity as they had in the first but it was Cork who looked like threating for a goal. Their first opportunity came four minutes in but Béibhinn Nic an tSithigh pulled off a magnificent save to keep them at bay. The sides exchanged points before Cork had shot number two at goal but Béibhinn Nic an tSithigh was at her best once again to keep them at bay. Leah McMahon & Eabha O’Donovan exchanged frees as the gap remained at eight points. Mid way through the second half Kerry got their third goal of the game. Amy Curtin who was back from injury and made a substitute appearance in the win against Clare was making her first start on Sunday rifled home to the top corner of the net to the delight of the Kerry supporters in the stand. Kerry was now firmly in control and a lead they truly deserved. Cork as you would expect kept throwing everything at Kerry and were tapping over the scores. Kerry’s goal was to be their last score of the game but that is not to take away from some of the excellent defending and work rate displayed by everyone of the Kerry players for the remainder of the match and indeed throughout the match. Anna Collins leading by example showing great leadership in the final quarter when Cork kept pressing for that goal in the hope of igniting a late comeback. Cork kept the scoreboard ticking over with points from Eabha O’Donovan and Ava McAuliffe. In the dying moments Cork had one last attack on the Kerry goal but Béibhinn Nic an tSithigh was once again alert to the danger and keep her clean sheet intact. Shortly after referee Patrick Smith blew the fulltime whistle to the delight to the Kerry supporter, players and management. Kerry now go forward to the All Ireland Semi Final on Thursday 11th July. Kerry make it two wins out of two in Munster

TG4 Munster Senior Championship Round 2

Kerry 1-14 Cork 1-10

Dan Kearney in Brosna GAA

Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh struck for 1-4 and Danielle O’Leary for 0-4 as Kerry sealed their place in the Munster Final at Brosna GAA in the TG4 Munster Senior Championship Round 2 encounter.

Tipperary’s 4-5 to 0-11 victory over Waterford means that the winners of Cork v Tipperary next Saturday in Mallow will decide who joins Kerry in the final.

The sides exchanged early scores with Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh from a free and Daire Kiely with a long range effort for Cork that hopped off the hard Brosna surface and over the bar.

Cork, playing with the aid of a stiff breeze then hit 2 points on the trot with the dangerous Lydia McDonagh pointing her own free and Abigail with one from play in the 9th minute.

Kerry threatened the Cork goal but overcooked the final passbefore Anna Galvin hit a fine score following a strong Aishling O’Connell run at the heart of the Cork defence.

Lydia McDonagh took on the Kerry defence and slotted a fine score but then it was Kerry’s turn to finally make some headway with Niamh Carmody splitting the posts and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh blasting over after Danielle O’Leary did the spadework.

The sides were now level at 0-4 apiece with 20 minutes played and Kerry started to take a stranglehold on the contest. A scorching run from Mary O’Connell saw the final pass overcooked once more before Danielle O’Leary and the brilliant Lydia McDonagh exchanged score.

O’Leary pointed once more for Kerry in the 27th minute and a minute later Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh struck for Kerry’s goal after a brilliant through pass from Niamh Carmody to put Kerry 1-6 to 0-5 ahead.

Cork refused to lie down and Eilis Lynch was forced into a brilliant goal line clearance from Lydia McDonagh although Sadhbh McGoldrick did point the rebound from range.

Lydia McDonagh added a free for Cork at the death and it was Kerry that took a slender 1-6 to 0-7 lead in at half time.

Kerry put on the afterburners at the start of the second half and hit 4 scores on the trot from Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, Niamh Carmody, the hard working Anna Galvin and Danielle O’Leary with a lovely individual effort to push the hosts 1-10 to 0-7 ahead 6 minutes in.

Danielle O’Leary struck another fine score for Kerry but then Melissa Duggan went on a mesmerising run and capped it off with a goal to leave Cork just 3 behind, 1-11 to 1-8 with 12 left to play.

The sides traded scores down the stretch and despite Kerry losing Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Kayleigh Cronin near the finish, a Danielle O’Leary free sealed Kerry’s place in the Munster Final.
