Kerry unlucky in final minutes in second round game.

Our senior ladies team were unlucky on Sunday (8th Feb) in their second round game in the Tesco HomeGrown Ladies Football National League. Match report Pat Hartnett PRO.

Kerry 1-11 Cork 1-12

Kerry lost by the narrowest of margins to All Ireland Champions Cork in Rd 2 of the Tesco HomeGrown Division 1 Ladies National League played in Cloughduv on Sunday 8th Feb. Cork were the early pace setters with points by Valerie Mulcahy and Rhona Ni Buchalla. .Sarah Houlihan got Kerry’s first point after 8 mins followed by a Clare O Sullivan point a minute later. Cork pressed on with 4 more points from Ni Buachalla, Anne Walshe and 2 from Laura Crowley Sarah Houlihan scored her second for Kerry in the 20th minute following a great solo run. Cork got in for a Ni Buachalla goal followed a minute later with a point from Laura Crowley. However Kerry finished the half on top with the last 7 minutes belonging to Kerry as Lorraine Scanlon moved to full forward and Louise Galvin moved to mid field. The move worked wonders as Claire O Sullivan & Lorraine Scanlon all pointed and with the last kick of the game Louise Galvin skimmed the crossbar with rasper of a shot to leave the half time score Cork 1-8 Kerry 06. Both teams exchanged wides early in the second half as Bernie Breen came in for Marie Quirke for Kerry & Emma Farmer added point no 9 for Cork. The tempo of the game increased as Kerry piled on the pressure with points by the relentless Denise Hallissey, Sarah Houlihan. Meagan O’Connell came in for Claire o Sullivan & made an impact winning key possession. Then on the 19th minute Louise Ni Mhuirceartaigh rattled the Cork net for Kerry when she fielded a Sarah Houlihan free. Megan o Connell levelled the game on the 22nd minute with a point as Cork were feeling the Kerry pressure. With 8 minutes left and the teams 1- 9 apiece it was all to play for with the game now in tit for tat mode. Louise Galvin put Kerry ahead with 7 mins left to play, Geraldine Flynn answered with a point; it was level again. Sarah Houlihan put Kerry ahead with 3 mins left and Cork levelled again through Shauna Kelly. Sarah Houlihan put Kerry in front again with a point and Marie O Callaghan levelled again seconds later. With the sizeable crowd getting behind their teams Louise Galvin rattled the upright but her shot went wide. Geraldine Flynn pointed for Cork on the 30th minute to put them ahead. Kerry had a chance to share the points but Anna Galvin’s well hit shot was narrowly wide. Overall it was a brilliant team performnace particularly in the second half & Kerry will have learned a lot and will bring a lot of positives from the game. Kerry’s next outing is on 22nd Feb against Laois which is at home. This the first home game of year & we are hoping for a large crowd to come & support the team.
