The Championships commenced with aplomb with Preliminary Games & Quarter Finals taking place.

On Monday in Junior A, Austin Stacks faced a formidable Rathmore who won promotion from Junior B last year. The Rockies were without key players & unfortunately found the East Kerry side too hot to handle. Rathmore progressing to next phase Final Score: Austin Stacks 1-06 Rathmore 7-19.

On Tuesday the other Rounds of the Junior A took place in the Killarney area. Corca Dhuibhne travelled to Dr Crokes, with both teams going into the game on the back of good league form. Amanda Brosnan excelled for the Crokes side, however was lacking suitable back up. The young Corca Dhuibhne side were able to look to Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh for scores at crucial stages & came out on top in the end – Dr Crokes 3-11 Corca Dhuibhne 3-19.

In the final game of the Junior A Championship saw Kilcummin host Abbeydorney. Abbeydorney who were without key players due to travel & injury had a disappointing league campaign were hoping to get their season back on track with a good championship. Kilcummin were missing key forward Debra Murphy. Both sides struggled to maintain clean possession with some way ward passing, but it was Abbeydorney who despite enjoying a lions share of possession went in at half time a point down. But in the second half, with some positional switches, they managed to get better ball into their devastating forwards Aoife Fitzgerald & Noreen Fealy who were proving a handful for their markers. Kilcummin also had enough possession but for some tight defending from Laura Collins in centre back & the Abbeydorney full back line they would have been in for scores. Abbeydorney in the end ran out winners, final score Kilcummin 2-06 Abbeydorney 5-06.

In the Junior C – Causeway hosted Beale in preliminary game, with the winners facing Currow. Unfortunately Causeway were much too strong around the park for the Beale side & ran out easy winners. Causeway 3-19 Beale 0-0.

Final game of the evening was the preliminary game in the Senior Championship between Scartaglin & neighbours Desmonds/Duagh. Scartaglin in their first year senior were missing key players but despite that put in a sterling display. Scartaglin played with a strong breeze in the first half and went 2 points up through the lively Elaine O Connor. It took the Desmonds/Duagh girls a while to settle but led superbly by Cait Lynch at center back and Lorraine Scanlon on the 40, they soon took control of the game. Desmonds/Duagh goal was scored by after a quickfire passing move.

Desmonds /Duagh played with the breeze in the second half and proceeded to finish off the game early in the third quarter with some superb point kicking. Early long ball was paying dividends for Desmonds/Duagh and the inside forward line of Aine O Connor and Leanne Mangan tormented their opponents throughout. Scartaglin goalkeeper Hannah Fortune produced 3 point blank saves to keep her team in the game. Ultimately though , the Desmonds/Duagh girls proved much stronger on the night and were deserving winners.
Best for Scartaglin were Hannah Fortune, Denise Dunlea, Aisling O’Connell and Rebecca Kerin
Best for Desmonds/Duagh were Aine O Connor, Leanne Mangan, Cait Lynch, Lorraine Scanlon, Aisling Leonard and Eilis Lynch. They now progress to meet Listowel Emmetts in the Quarter Final on Friday evening in Listowel.
