Kerry U/16 Team Named For Munster Final Clash V Tipperary And Preview.

The Kerry U16 management have named their starting line up and panel for today’s Munster Final clash against Tipperary in Mallow at 4.45.

Munster U/16 Ladies Final

Kerry v Tipperary Mallow May 5th @4.45 pm

Kerry U/16’s will face old rivals Tipperary in the Munster U/16 final on Saturday May 5th in Mallow. The sides have a history of meeting each other since U/14 level and will be well aware of each others strengths – and weaknesses.

The sides met in the first round of the Munster competition on March 19th but Kerry were on fire that day and recorded a 5-13 to 1-4 victory. Kerry took a 4-11 to 1-1 lead in at half time, and the shell shocked Tipperary outfit had no answer to Kerry’s pace and power. Kerry had 8 different scorers on that occasion, a fact that is bound to have pleased their manager Rory Kilgallen.

Next up for the Kingdom girls was a home tie at John Mitchels complex against Cork. Once again Kerry were irresistible and romped to a 5-14 to 1-6 victory.

Tipperary had a very mixed Munster campaign. After the initial loss to Kerry they also suffered a hiding at the hands of Cork when they went down on a 3-14 to 1-5 scoreline. This meant that Tipperary had to meet Cork again to have a shot at the Munster final, and they upset all of the odds as they recorded a 3-6 to 1-8 victory. Centre half forward Ava Fennessy was on fire that day and slotted over 7 points. She will have to be watched but Tipperary also had excellent performances from Caitlinn Kennedy, Queva O’Meara, Leah Cohen, Ashling Ryan and Maeve McGuigan.

Kerry have plenty quality in their ranks as well, but they will have to be wary of the Tipperary challenge. Players like goalkeeper Ciara Butler,Rachel O’Connor, Maud Kelly, Aoife Dillane, Gemma Kearney, Rachel Dwyer,Ava Doherty, Mary O’Connell,Aisling O’Connell, Danielle O’Leary, Siofra O’Shea, Clodagh Evans,Mary O’Connor, Ella Teahan and Rachel Kilgallen have been performing very well for their side, but in fairness there is quality all through this Kerry squad.

The team will line out as follows;

1. Ciara Butler (Castlegregory)
2. Maud Kelly (Fossa)
3. Rachel O Connor (Corca Dhuibhne)
4. Ava Doherty (Glenflesk)
5. Gemma Kearney (Castleisland Desmonds)
6. Rachel Dwyer (Southern Gaels) Captain.

Sean Walsh Elected As Kerry LGFA Chairman.

The Kerry Ladies GFA held their May County Board meeting at the Kerins O’Rahillys clubhouse on Thursday night and the big news to emerge was the election of Sean Walsh of Moyvane to the role of Chairperson.

Walsh who is the former Chairman of Kerry GAA and Munster was proposed by Kieran Savage of the Ballymacelligott club and was seconded by Dave Randles of Killarney Legion. Mr Walsh’s election was met by a unanimous show of hands by all of the delegates present.

In his opening Chairperson’s address Mr Walsh said that he wasn’t there to take over Kerry LGFA but instead he would help to put the structures in place that his experience had taught him. Mr Walsh was a member of the Kerry GAA executive for 30 years and served as Chairman for 10 of those.

Walsh also stated that it was important that the County Board was not just about the people in the executive positions, but instead it was about ordinary club members who must do their bit to help out. He said that there was a massive amount of work being done by people in the background, but an awful lot more must be done for it to be truly successful.

A number of measures the he proposed were the broadening of the fixtures committee so that the work load could be shared. He also felt that a communications committee needed to be put in place with a geographical spread of people in the county involved that could help. Mr Walsh also felt that a new finance committee needed to be formed as well as a defined development and coaching structure.

Mr Walsh finished by saying that he hoped that he would receive the support of the people around the county and that he would give his new role his best shot.

Meanwhile Donal Rahilly of Ballymacelligott moved from Assistant Secretary to the Secretary position, Debbie Hannon of Beale was elected to the Assistant Secretary position, Tomas O Hainifin of Abbeydorney was elected as Cultural Officer and Dan Kearney of Castleisland Desmonds was elected as PRO.

New County Secretary Donal Rahilly said that he was looking forward to working with Sean Walsh. He said that Mr Walsh had already left a big impression on him with his ideas and ambitions for Kerry LGFA. Donal Rahilly also complimented clubs for the efficient running of their league games so far, and encouraged clubs to send in officers to the Club Officer training night to be held on the 15th May in ISK.He also said that 2019 would be a very exciting year for Kerry LGFA with the National Congress due to be held in the county.

Finally Mr Rahilly congratulated the Kerry U/14’s for reaching the Munster Final, and he also wished the Kerry U/16’s and Kerry minors the best of luck in their Munster finals this weekend.

Kerry Schools Prepare For PPS Junior Finals.

As the young footballers of Intermediate School Killorglin and St Brigids Killarney prepare for their All Ireland Finals we preview the big games ahead for both sides.

All Ireland PPS Junior A Final

IS Killorglin v Loreto CavanBanagher Friday 20th April at 1pm.

ISK

All roads lead to Banagher County Offaly next Friday when Intermediate School Killorglin hope to bring back the Junior A All Ireland title. Standing in their way are the Ulster champions Loreto Cavan , and they are sure to provide a stern test for the Killorglin girls, in what could prove to be a classic final.

ISK come into the game on the back of a very impressive Munster campaign in which they racked up 20 goals and 44 points in a series of hammerings dished out to Loreto Fermoy, Christ the King Cork and John the Baptist of Limerick. The Munster final was a much tighter affair but ISK eventually accounted for Loreto Clonmel on a 2-14 to 3-8 scoreline after extra time. ISK were thankful to goals from Rachel Evans and Cora Joy that day, whilst Roisin Griffin was in superb point scoring form from play and frees. Next up was Loreto Navan of Meath and ISK stormed to a 3-13 to 3-7 victory.

ISK’s opponents Loreto Cavan are a formidable outfit in their own right. They are no slouches on the scoring front either and have amassed 16 goals and 41 points in their 3 Ulster championship games. They also accounted for Presentation Tuam of Galway on a 6-9 to 4-5 scoreline in the All Ireland semi final. Their senior team recently won the All Ireland A title as well and a number of the players that started that game will line out next Friday for the Junior team. The very dangerous Ally Cahill is a player that will have to be watched while Ashling Walls, Lorna O’Reilly, Aoife Crowe and Olivia Murphy are players that could open up the ISK defence if allowed.

There is serious quality in the ISK side as well though and most of their starting 15 have worn the Kerry jersey at underage level. Players like Claire Fealy in goals, Andrea Nolan, Kayleigh McGlashen,Orla Dunphy and Beithinn Brosnan are excellent performers in defence. Rachel Evans and Ailbhe Clifford form a formidable midfield , while in attack ISK will be looking to players like Roisin Griffin, Cora Joy, Fodhla Houlihan and Mairin Duffy to get the scores.

ISK’s management team of Anna Maria O’ Donoghue, Darragh O’Regan, Dave Stanton and James Doyle have done great work in preparing the team and will be quietly confident of lowering the Cavan sides colours on Friday. It will be a tough task, but with the quality that is in their side they are well capable of bringing the All Ireland title back to Killorglin.

All Ireland PPS Junior B Final

St Brigids Killarney v Colaiste Bhaile Chlair (Galway)Rathkeale,Saturday 21st April at 1 pm.

St. Brigid's Team 2018

St Brigids Killarney are the second Kerry school in action this weekend when they face Colaiste Bhaile Chlair of Galway in the All Ireland PPS B final on Saturday.  St Brigids had a relatively easy campaign in Munster and ran up a massive 18 goals and 46 points in their victories over Colaiste na Sceilge, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, St. Mary’s Mallow, and St Flannan’s of Clare. The Munster final was an all Kerry affair with St Brigid’s triumphing over Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luchra Rathmore on a 6-9 to 2-8 scoreline, whilst it was a much tighter affair in the All Ireland semi final where they had a single point to spare in a 1-7 to 1-6 win over Eureka Secondary School Kells.

Like ISK, St Brigids have a number of players with intercounty experience in their side with Tara Murphy, Ava Doherty, Chloe O’Connor, Jade Potts, Ciara Randles and Anna Clifford all top performers. They will have able back up in the likes of Isabelle Murphy, Meghan Brosnan and Mairead Bennett. In fairness there is quality all through the Killarney side and with Anna Clifford on song it is difficult to see them being beaten.

Colaiste Bhaile Chlair is a relatively new school in Claregalway as it was only opened in 2013, but they have made rapid strides in ladies football in the last few years. Last Saturday they claimed the All Ireland PPS senior C All Ireland title at the first time of asking and will have some of those girls in their ranks for Saturday. After an easy route through the Connacht championship, Colaiste Bhaile Chlair had a ding dong tussle against St Catherines College Armagh in the All Ireland semi final before eventually pulling through on a 4-11 to 4-9 scoreline. They have notable players in Kiera Kearney, Kate Slevin, Shauna Brennan, Aiva Murray,Elaine Mitchell, Laura Flynn, and Shannon Connelly and are sure to test the mettle of the Killarney girls. Colaiste Bhaile Chlair are managed by Galway senior footballer Fabienne Cooney.

St Brigids are managed by Adrienne Brosnan and Paudie Breen and they are certain to have their girls well prepared for the battle ahead. It promises to be an epic battle, but St Brigids should have the quality to pull through in the finish.

Kerry U14’s win a classic

KerryU14_v_Tipperary_2018

The Kerry U14 team had to dig deep to overcome adversity and Tipperary in the MLGFA U14 Championship semi-final.

Match report:

Kerry U. 14’s had a well-deserved one-point victory over Tipperary in the Munster A Semi Final, a game played at high tempo, with sheer determination, an abundance of goals, a disallowed goal for Aisling Hanafin and excellent passages of play by both teams. Kerry opened the scoring with a point from captain Amy Harrington, Tipperary replied with a goal and a point. Kerry were down to fourteen players very early in the first half. Another point from Harrington, a well taken goal by Melanie Higgins and the conscientious Finola Ní Chathasaigh rattled Tipperary with 1-1. Tipperary pressed hard scoring 1-4 but goal keeper Saoirse Dorrian made a great save to keep Kerry in the game. Kerry went in at half time two points down with the score 2-5 to 2-3. The Kerry girls came out with fire and determination in the second half to win this game. Kerry rattled Tipperary with two well executed goals from Amy Harrington. Kerry now playing with 12 players, continued to attack and create chances. Kerry’s Laura Leslie was unlucky when her goal chance hit the crossbar. Tipperary replied with a goal and a couple of points. Kerry’s defence worked tirelessly to keep Tipperary out. The Kerry backline was dominant, with dogged defence. The hardworking midfield pairing of Ellie O’ Connell and Caoimhe Guerin-Crowley aided their backline when called upon and supplied the forward line with superb ball. Tipperary continued to attack, scoring a goal and clocked up more points. This did not unsteady this Kerry U14’s team. With the final whistle approaching, Kerry were awarded a well-deserved free taken by Melanie Higgins. With the free dropping short, the hardworking Harrington was awarded a penalty for her endeavours. Kerry’s diligent vice-captain Ellie O’ Connell stepped up to the mark to fire Kerry into the lead with a rocket of a shot into the net. Tipperary continued to press and had a two-point advantage. But the industrious Melanie Higgins shook Tipperary with the final goal of the game after hard work from Finola Ní Chathasaigh and Heather McNamara. The gallant Kerry side held out for a one point victory over a strong Tipperary side on a score line of 6-3 to 3-11. Kerry now march on to play Cork in the Munster A final in the coming weeks. The Kerry Management are extremely proud of the tireless, determined attitude and effort made by this Kerry U.14s team in the Munster Semi Final.

Scorers: Amy Harrington 2-2, Melanie Higgins 2-0, Finola Ní Chatasaigh 1-1, Ellie O’ Connell 1-0

4 Kerry Teams In Action This Weekend.

Munster U/14 Championship

Kerry u14s 2018

The Kerry U/14’s are the first team in action when they take on Tipperary in Bansha at 1.30 on Saturday. Kerry suffered a 5-03 to 1-8 loss to Cork in the first round but in reality there was very little in the contest and Cork’s ability to score goals at vital times proved to be the difference between the sides. It is a must win game for Kerry as a loss will see them relinquish their Munster title, while a win will see them qualify for the final once again. Manager John Doona has named a strong panel for the game, and Kerry will be confident of lowering the Premier Counties colours.

Munster U/16 Championship

Kerry U16s 2018

Kerry U/16’s welcome Cork to John Mitchels for their second game of the Munster campaign at 2oc on Saturday. Kerry go into the game on the back of a comprehensive 5-13 to 1-4 victory over Tipperary in the first round of the competition.  It will be Cork’s first day out in the competition and they will be determined to retain the Munster title that they won in 2017. The U/16 championship is being run on a round robin league basis and a win for the Kingdom would see them parachute strainght into the final. Lidl National Football League Round 7

Kerry ladies v Mayo 18

The stakes couldn’t be much higher as Kerry host Westmeath in Strand Road Tralee. Kerry’s 3 point deduction during the week leaves them pointless so it’s winner takes all on Sunday. If there’s a loser on the day, that team will be relegated and playing Division 2 football next year.Westmeath suffered a big defeat to Donegal in round 3, and lost out by ten points against Cork, but they’ve given a decent account of themselves in the matches with Mayo, Dublin and Monaghan.Kerry’s last outing saw them concede 6-11 against Donegal, and confidence levels are bound to be low. Kerry have the experience and quality to pull this out of the bag however, so a vocal home support could go a long way towards ensuring victory.

Manager Graham Shine has named the following side for the game;

1 Laura Fitzgerald  Na Gaeil
2 Laoise Coughlan Rathmore
3 Aislinn Desmond Rathmore

Munster Minor Championship

Kerry minor ladies v Tipperary 2018

Kerry will travel to Cloughduv on Bank Holiday Monday to take on Cork in Round 3 of the Munster Championship with a 2oc throw in. Both Kerry and Cork had good victories over Tipperary in the earlier rounds and whichever side wins will automatically qualify for the Munster final.  The loser of the contest will have to face Tipperary once more in a semi final.

2. Kate Maher (Kilcummin)

Kerry U/16s Defeat Tipperary.

Munster U16A Championship

Kerry 5-13 Tipperary 1-4

Kerry U16 Ladies footballers got their Munster Championship campaign off to a flying start with a comprehensive 21 point victoy over a fancied Tipperary side in Tipperary Town last Monday.

The most impressive statistic to emerge from the game from a Kerry point of view was the fact that both of their midfielders and 6 forwards contributed to the scoreboard on the day. This, allied to a teak tough defence that gave very little away, laid the foundation for some superb Kerry teamwork throughout the contest that was bound to please their management team.

Although dominant for most of the game, Kerry still had to call on netminder Ciara Butler to produce 3 outstanding saves on the day, but in truth Tipperary never looked like mounting any type of serious challenge to the overall outcome.

The foundation for Kerry’s victory was laid in a superb first half in which they outscored their opponents by 4-11 to 1-1. The Kerry half backline of Gemma Kearney, Rachel Dwyer and Aoife Dillane were completely dominant in this period, and their dogged defence, allied to a hard working midfield of Mary and Aisling O’Connell, gave the Kerry forwards the platform to display their scoring prowess. Scorer in chief was full forward Siofra O’Shea who contributed 2 goals and 5 points in this period, while she received able backup from Danielle O’Leary, Rachel Kilgallen, Ella Teahan , Clodagh Evans and Mary Collins, who all contributed to an impressive scoreboard. Ashling Ryan scored a point for Tipperary in the first half while Orla Winston chipped in with a good goal.

Tipperary, playing with the wind in the second half, came at Kerry with more determination. While they did threaten at times, keeper Butler, and some great defence from Maud Kelly, Rachel O’Connor and Ava Doherty in the full backline kept their attackers at bay. Tipperary did manage to score 3 points in the second half as Kerry missed a number of chances at the other end. Siofra O’Shea dusted herself off to score a penalty after she was fouled herself , while points from Mary O’Connell and Clodagh Evans sealed the Kerry victory. Kerry manager Rory Kilgallen gave a number of his substitutes some game time, and the manner in which they aquitted themselves gives great confidence to the strength in depth of his panel.

Kerry U16s  next game is on March 31st in John Mitchels Complex against Cork.

Kerry scorers ; Siofra O’Shea 3-5 (1 goal pen, 4f), Mary Collins (1-1), Aisling O’Connell (0-2), Clodagh Evans (0-2), Ella Teahan (1 goal), Mary O’Connell (0-1), Rachel Kilgallen (0-1), Danielle O’Leary (0-1).

Kerry’s All Stars Through The Years.

Following on from Caroline and Lorraine’s brilliant achievement of winning All Stars this year, I decided to list all of Kerry’s winners since they were first launched in 1980. In total the Kingdom ladies have amassed 84 All Star awards, with the most productive period being in Kerry’s golden era of the 1980’s. The great Mary Jo Curran leads the way with a record 11 awards, while Marina Barry is out on her own with 6, closely followed by Bridget Leen, Eileen Lawlor and Geraldine O’Shea with 5, while Annette Walsh and Dell Whyte claimed 5.

The current Kerry ladies team can lay claim to having 7 All Stars in their ranks with Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh and Sarah Houlihan with 2 a piece, while Aislinn Desmond, Lorraine Scanlon and Caroline Kelly have one each.

No Joy For Finuge/St Senans in Munster Junior Final.

No joy for Finuger/St Senans last Saturday – here is Munster LGFA ‘s account of the game…
A Dream start of two goals paved the way for Aghada`s success in the Munster LGFA Junior club final with Finuge St Senans in Mallow .Aileen McGrath hit the net in the first minute and a minute later Christine Moran found the net to put Aghada two goals up , Miriam opened the scoring for the Kerry girls after eight minutes but were finding it hard to hit the target .Hannah Looney struck a good point and Emma Farmer finished the half with two points to make the half time score in this Munster Junior Club Championship Final Aghada (Cork) 2-3 Finuge St. Senan’s (Kerry) 0-1

The Kerry girls started the second half in determined fashion with two points from captain Jakie Horgan, a pointed free from Miriam O Keefe mid way in the half had reduced the gap to five points . A pointed free from Emma Farmer steadied the Aghada nerves and a minute later she was pulled down in the square for a penalty she picked herself up and used her soccer experience to slot the ball expertly to the net. The Kerry girls fought back but wayward shooting left them down they did have a great goal scoring chance but Roisin Phelan got across to block down ,they did manage a late point but were left to rue the great start they gave Aghada final score Aghada 3-04 Finuge St Senans 0-05. Aghada will now contest the All Ireland semi final against the Connaught champions
