Munster MLGFA Senior Championship.
Kerry 1-14 Waterford 1-07
Kerry ran out 1-14 to 1-7 winners against Waterford in Brosna on Saturday last and the result confirmed another Kerry Cork final in the Munster MLGFA Senior championship final on July 10. Kerry faced a Waterford side who had re-entered the senior competition after winning the Intermediate All-Ireland last September. Kerry had one win under their belt with a five-point win against Cork the week before, while Waterford had lost to the same team earlier in the month.
Visitors Waterford opened the scoring with a pointed free from centre forward Maria Delahunty, she was to be their main scorer for the day. Kerry soon settled adding two points from a Sarah Houlihan pointed free and Bernie Breen from play. It was in the 8th minute that Kerry hit the back of the Waterford net as Laura Rodgers passed to the advancing Sarah Houlihan who collected and finished it in style. In the second quarter, Kerry added a further three points, from Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh, Laura Rodgers and Sarah Houlihan. Waterford did respond with a move that resulted in a goal, as wing forward Grainne Kenneally found Michelle Ryan inside the 13-metre line, who in turn drilled it low pass the Kerry keeper. Kerry’s Cassandra Buckley replied with a point, but Waterford replied with two more from frees, from Maria Delahunty. The home side cancelled both of them out before the half time whistle as Jane Lynch and Sarah Houlihan found the black spot on the cross bar and Kerry headed in at half time 5 points clear. Kerry 1-08 Waterford 1-3.
Waterford started the second half with the first score, a point from Maria Delahunty. Kerry’s defence looked shaky in the 3rd qtr with Waterford threating on a few occasions, but the home side cleared their lines and from those clearences Jane Lynch added two more to the Kerry scoreboard while Maria Delahunty kept Waterford in touch with two more pointed frees from Maria Delahunty.
Kerry weathered the storm with Sarah Houlihan slotting over a further two points. Waterford went in search of a goal, the Kerry keeper Elaine O’Sullivan intercepted the pass across her goal. Kerry moved on from there and with two more points from Sarah Houlihan and Lorraine Scanlon, giving Kerry an 8 point lead in the closing minutes, put this game out of Waterfords reach. Waterford did peg one back with a pointed free from Maria Delahunty. But Waterford had a strong wind advantage in the second half and only had a 4 point return and couldnt us it to their advantage as Kerry stood solid and even with Waterfords Sinead Delahunty’s tally of seven points from frees and the Michelle Ryan first half goal, it was not enought to upset the homeside. Kerry advance to the Munster Final on Sun July 10 which will throw in, in the Killarney Legion GAA pitch at 7pm against Cork.
