Kerry 3-16 Waterford 5-09
A shock defeat was staring Kerry in the face, until a dramatic and well taken goal by Deirdre Corridan gave Kerry full points from this high scoring Bord Gáis Energy National Football League game in Castleisland on Sunday last. William O’Sullivan operating without some of the regulars may have cause for alarm in the defensive leaking of 5 goals.

The home side opened with a Sarah Houlihan point in the opening minutes and was cancelled out by a Linda Wall effort after 6 minutes of play.
Kerry had the better of the exchanges in the opening quarter as 2 points by Patrice Dennehy and 1 each from Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh and Deirdre Corridan gave Kerry a 5 points to 1 advantage after 10 minutes,
Waterford’s Linda Wall pulled one back for the visitors, but Kerry again went further ahead with a point each from Ni Mhuircheartaigh and Patrice Dennehy until a doggy and determined fight back from Waterford saw a Mairead Wall shot hit the back of the Kerry net after sloppy defending by their back line. Michelle Ryan added another point for the visitors and thy then hit a purple patch in which they punished Kerry’s poor defending with 2 goals from their corner forward Hanna Landers which put Waterford ahead 3-3 to 0-7. Kerry did respond well as points from Ni Mhuircheartaigh, Dennehy, Corridan, Louise Galvin and a well executed long range point by Lorraine Scanlon to the delight of the home fans in the 27th minute levelled proceedings. But again Waterford stepped up a gear as they finished the opening half the stronger with 2 points by Linda Wall and a McGrath well executed finish which raised the green flag, saw Waterford lead at half time 4-05 to 0-12.

Just after the restart Kerry got a penalty as Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh was fouled inside the large square, but Patrice Dennehy’s shot hit the upright and went wide. Kerry responded as Bernie Breen after a fine solo effort pointed on the 3 rd minute but Aileen Wall cancelled it as she split the posts. Kerry’s reply from the kick out saw their first of 3 goals as Bernie Breen collected at midfield and found Deirdre Corridan free, who shot low and hard, but her shot was stopped by Ciara Kearey and Mary O’Keefe was on hand to pounce on the cleared effort and blasted the ball to the net. Megan O’Connell replaced Sarah Houlihan and immediately potted a point, A Mary O’Keeffe free had the teams all square at 1-15 to 4-06 at the end of the 3rd qtr. As with many times in this game Waterford’s attack saw Linda Wall slip through the Kerry defence and punished them with well taken goal as the visitors now led by 3, 5-7 to 1-15 to the visitors
Elaine O’Connor was introduced for Mary O’Keefe as both Bernie Breen and Michelle Ryan exchanged points until, as the old saying “if you work hard then the hard work will pay off” saw Kerry’s dominance pay off, as they piled on the pressure on the Waterford defence as keeper Ciara Kearey saved 2 on the line until another high ball sent in saw Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh fist a beauty to the net and now with just a point between the teams.

Kerry fought, dug deep and never gave up, as the injury time was running out and a shock home defeat on the cards until a defensive error from Trish Fitzgerald who when clearing a ball sent it back to her keeper and Deidre Corridan intercepted the pass and with just the keeper to beat and nerves of steel crashed it to the Waterford net giving Kerry a nervous 2 point lead.
Waterford’s Mags Riordan had a conciliation point in the last passage of play before referee Keith Delahunty of Tipperary sounded the final whistle to end a titanic struggle for the home side, to the delight and sigh of relief of the home support and adding to Waterford’s woe’s of late.
